Chain Leadership

Vision

The Institute of Directors in New Zealand advises that the first of its four pillars for governance best practice is determining purpose and strategic direction. Each case study in this research expressed a vision that aspired to create value for consumers based on the attributes defining the chain’s product quality.

The vision often expressed also an apirational culture for the value chain and its participating members. The chain might commit itself, for example, to a high-performance culture that focuses on collaboration to deliver a high quality experience to the chain’s final consumers.

Questions for developing a value chain

  • What is the overall vision or purpose of the value chain?

  • Does this vision align the attributes defining the chain’s product quality with the values of the final consumers in its target market segments?

  • What is the aspirational culture for the value chain and its participating members?
