International consumers make important associations between products and their country of origin. Our research profiles these associations, specialising in New Zealand’s international reputation and profile.
A product’s country of origin can often serve as a proxy for other attributes, such as food safety or quality, and these can influence consumer preferences and purchase choices. While seemingly simple, understanding these associations can be complex, with different facets or levels of origin, such as origin of manufacturing, origin of design, origin of ingredients, or origin of brand. The AERU has studied country of origin effects extensively across multiple research streams, and is well-suited to providing insight into country of origin effects, particularly for New Zealand products.
